In most cases, some general server maintenance is all you’ll need to get the system running again. However, there are cases where parts need to ordered and shipped in to solve the problem.
In the event that the issue is software related, then these issues can be taken care of within a short period of time. These repairs will either be done on-site or off-site at our offices, depending on the issue.
The most common points of hardware failure in a server are as follows;
- Hard Drives
- Power supplies
- Cooling System
The biggest issue with a server is that it is often placed in a room with little or no traffic and basically left to run.
Because the room itself is often locked, there is a tendency to not notice issues as they develop.
Just like any other computer, a server tends to attract a build-up of dust. The dust eventually causes over heating issues with the server.
The effected areas are in the power supply, the processor fan and cooling systems. If no server maintenance is being performed, then eventually the server will begin to overheat. At this point common symptoms are frequent rebooting or even severe crashes.
With regards to the Hard Drives, it is important to looking out for clicking or ticking sounds, especially on startup. This is a clear indication that the hard drive may be close to crashing.
When a motherboard issue occurs, this is usually caused by an electrical surge. Usually the motherboard will get blown and will need replacement.
The most common server software is Windows Server. All windows products are easily affected by certain issues that may crop up.
Common issues with windows server include;
- Windows Server Updates
- Other Software Updates
- Malware and Virus Infections
- Partition Issues
As odd as it sounds, updates can create issues for the operating system. In fact even though updates patch up certain issues, it’s not uncommon for them to create new ones.
Staff on your network who may have an infected computer can easily pass on the infection to the server. Since Microsoft Windows is prone to malware and viruses, the server software is also prone to the same issues.
Partitioning on any hard drive that uses moving parts can also get affected. The very nature of a hard drive is to store data on clusters that are available. Sometimes data is written to different clusters and this can slow down the server.
It is recommended that a server be scheduled in when computer maintenance is done at your business. This can prevent up anywhere from 50% to 90% of issues that may crop up.
Getting your server maintained every three to four months is very important. Part of the server maintenance covers the hardware and the other covers software.

The data on your server is constantly at risk. What would happen if your server hard drive crashes?
